National Law University Odisha (NLUO) is a distinguished public law university located in Cuttack, Odisha. Established in 2009 through an act passed by the Odisha State Legislature, NLUO is one of the newer members of the National Law University family. Yet, it has quickly earned a reputation for academic excellence and innovation in legal education.
Nestled between the Mahanadi and Kathajodi rivers, the university's 50-acre campus offers a serene and inspiring environment for learning. Its modern infrastructure includes a state-of-the-art academic block, well-equipped classrooms, a spacious library (which has grown to become one of the largest law libraries in Asia), and dedicated residential facilities for students and faculty. The university also features moot court halls, an amphitheater, and a sports complex, contributing to a well-rounded campus experience.
Academically, NLUO offers integrated undergraduate degrees, such as the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), along with postgraduate and doctoral programs in law. These courses are designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for careers in law, the judiciary, academia, public policy, and the corporate sector. Admissions are primarily conducted through the national-level Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), ensuring a competitive and diverse student body.
NLUO places strong emphasis on research and social justice. It hosts several specialized centers that focus on areas such as tribal rights, public health law, access to justice, and governance. These centers not only support academic research but also engage with real-world legal and policy challenges.
Despite being a relatively young institution, NLUO has carved a niche for itself among India’s top law schools. Its graduates have gone on to excel in various fields, including legal practice, corporate law, civil services, and higher studies both in India and abroad.
In short, National Law University Odisha stands out as a dynamic, forward-thinking institution that combines rigorous legal education with a commitment to equity, research, and public service.
