Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is one of India’s most respected central universities, located in New Delhi. It was established in 1920 in Aligarh during the British Raj and later moved to Delhi in 1925. The university was founded by a group of nationalist Muslim leaders, including Maulana Mehmud Hasan, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, and Zakir Husain, who later became the President of India. Their main aim was to promote education that combined Indian values with modern knowledge, away from colonial influences.

In 1988, Jamia gained the status of a Central University through an act of the Indian Parliament. Since then, it has become a major hub for higher education in fields like arts, science, engineering, law, education, and social sciences. JMI has received recognition and approval from top national bodies like the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), and the Bar Council of India (BCI), depending on the courses offered.

The university has also received an ‘A++’ Grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), the highest grade awarded to Indian universities for quality education, infrastructure, teaching, and research. Additionally, it has been consistently ranked among the Top 10 Universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Education. In 2023, Jamia was ranked 3rd among Indian universities by NIRF.
